Here's Jeff's story: I am the second owner of my 1970 Cougar Convertible. The car was originally delivered as a special order Medium Metallic Blue with a Ginger interior and a black top. The original owner thought all convertibles should be red so the car was repainted. When I bought the car (I was only 14 years old and working in a restoration shop in TN) it had sat outside for a number of years and did not run. All of the original parts were there but the car seemed to be completely rusted through. I bought my Cougar for a mere $600. The initial work done to the car was only cosmetic. My father and I made sure the car ran, changed the color back to original and repaired the interior. I drove the car every day through high school and some of college. In 1992 I had a terrible accident and I thought the car would be totaled. (The car actually broke in half) The insurance company agreed to pay me to repair it and for the next four years I collected checks from them totaling about $14,000 for the repairs from the wreck. In those four years I took the time to restore the car properly. I removed every part from the car that had a bolt or screw. When possible I had the original parts repaired, including the original carburetor. I wanted to have a “driver” but still be able to win some awards at car shows. After all the paint, repair, engine work, interior work, and replacing the rockers, I finally got to drive the car to my first show. Amazingly the first show my car was in was the Cougar Nationals here in Louisville. I was very encouraged when I took third place in my class. Since that time I have worked mainly on the little details of a restoration that are sometimes overlooked. This car is definitely my pride and joy. I sometimes run into old classmates from high school and their comment is always “Do you still have that Cougar of yours?” Isn’t it the car you drive that people associate you with most?
